One birth record. Why the different charts?

Compare inputs and settings before comparing predictions. A practical checklist helps isolate zodiac, time and house differences.

The essentials

  • Check the birth record before comparing the chart pictures.
  • A tropical chart and a Lahiri sidereal chart can give different sign names for the same sky position.
  • If the planetary positions match but the houses differ, compare the house settings.

One website says your Moon is in Virgo. Another says Leo. It is reasonable to want a clear explanation before reading anything about yourself. Often the difference comes from a setting or a time conversion. A few checks can help you find it without changing your birth details until the pictures happen to agree.

First, compare the birth record

  • Date: check the day, month and year. A date such as 04/05 can be read in different ways.
  • Time: check AM or PM and whether the time is exact, rounded or remembered.
  • Place: choose the actual birthplace, including the correct town when names repeat.
  • Timezone: use the civil-time rules that applied there on the birth date, including daylight saving when relevant.

Keep the original local time beside any UTC conversion. UTC is a common time reference used in calculations. If both websites show it, the converted instant should agree before you compare the chart. Our birthplace and timezone guide explains why historical clock rules matter.

Then, check the zodiac

Most Western charts use the tropical zodiac. Vedic charts commonly use a sidereal zodiac. A sidereal chart also needs an offset convention, called an ayanamsa. Anantrix uses Lahiri for the public example. These reference points can give the same planet different sign labels.

Here is a computed example. For the fictional birth record of 15 January 1990 at 12:00 noon UTC in London, our server calculates the Moon at tropical Virgo 17.501 degrees and Lahiri sidereal Leo 23.788 degrees, rounded to three decimals. The birth instant has not changed. The reference point used to label the position has.

You can inspect all nine bodies in the sample settings comparison. This explains a settings difference; it is not an independent accuracy ranking of astrology websites.

If the signs agree, look at the houses

A sign and a house answer different questions. A sign is a section of the zodiac. A house places that section in relation to the chart's rising point or another stated reference. Whole-sign houses give one full sign to each house. Other house systems use different boundaries, so a planet can keep its sign while changing its displayed house.

Also check that you are comparing the main birth chart, or D1, with another D1. A Navamsa, or D9, is a divisional chart. Its sign placements are calculated for a different purpose and are not meant to look identical to the birth chart.

Keep a short comparison you can return to

  • Birth date, local time, place and converted UTC instant.
  • Tropical or sidereal zodiac, and the named ayanamsa if sidereal.
  • House system and chart type.
  • The displayed Sun and Moon positions, including degrees.
  • Mean or true lunar nodes if the difference concerns Rahu or Ketu.

If those settings agree and a position still differs, send the two position rows and the shared inputs to the provider. That is easier to investigate than two screenshots of very different chart styles. Small displayed differences may also come from rounding, so keep the degrees when you can.

Read the interpretation after the calculation is clear

Two astrologers can read the same placements differently. One may emphasise a Moon-sign transit; another may connect houses, planetary periods and the annual chart. Once the underlying chart is consistent, ask which factors support the explanation. Our sample readings show those connections beside the answer.

Questions you may have

Does a different sign prove a website is wrong?

No. Check whether the charts use the same zodiac and birth instant. Different declared settings can produce different labels.

Should I compare the chart drawing first?

Compare the position table first. Different drawing styles can display the same underlying positions.
