The 27 Nakshatras

The nakshatras are the 27 lunar mansions that divide the zodiac in Vedic astrology. Each one covers thirteen degrees and twenty minutes of sky, and carries its own ruling planet, god, and symbol. Your birth nakshatra is the division occupied by the Moon at your birth. In Vedic tradition, it is used to interpret personality, compatibility and dasha (planetary period) timing.

Find your own Nakshatra (birth star) and pada (its quarter) using your birth date, time and place.

How do I find my Nakshatra?

Use your birth date, local birth time and birthplace to calculate the Moon’s position. A birthday alone may not identify the correct birth star when the Moon changes divisions during that day. Your birth star is calculated the same way wherever you were born.

Is a Nakshatra the same as a Moon sign?

No. The 12 zodiac signs each span 30 degrees; the 27 nakshatras each span 13 degrees and 20 minutes. Both can describe the Moon’s position, at different levels of detail. Each nakshatra is also divided into four padas (quarters).

Questions, answered.

Can two people share a Moon sign but have different birth stars?

Yes. Signs and nakshatras divide the zodiac differently. Two Moons in the same 30-degree sign can fall in different birth-star divisions. Use the calculated nakshatra and pada rather than inferring them from the Moon-sign name alone.

Is a birth-star description a complete description of me?

It is a traditional description of one part of the chart. The exact Moon degree, other placements, houses and planetary periods add context in a fuller reading. You do not need to fit every phrase in a general description for the calculated star to be correct.
